on NAA Adelaide

The
closure of the National Archives of Australia Adelaide Office still
has a number of hurdles to jump and for many local and family historians
the resolution is far from satisfactory. What is now known can be
summarised as follows:
• the NAA Adelaide office will not close, but relocate
to two locations—admin and reading room will co-locate with
State Records in Leigh Street; the collection will be housed at
the old facility in Collinswood.
• the State budget has placed a cloud over State Records
sharing Collinswood. State records needs the space but no provision
was made in the budget and so a submission has to be made to Cabinet.
If State Records fails to secure funds to occupy the balance of
space at Collinswood then while the NAA will still move, we can
expect it to be temporary only.
• some records (a total of 427 shelf metres) will move interstate.
Some will gain item descriptions before being removed.
• all film media will relocate as Adelaide does not have
a cold storage facility. Item descriptions will be prepared before
this material leaves Adelaide.
• an insignificant amount of material will be returned to
Adelaide.
• the fate of the staff and staffing levels remains unknown.
At a recent meeting
of the Adelaide Consultative Committee at which each member was asked
to bring two members of their interest group, it was obvious that
the Director had previously determined the process and rather than
consulting, the members were told what would happen! Concern was expressed
that the argument for removal because of low public use was inappropriate
given the current poor descriptions of holdings. Few potential users
have little concept of the scope of the records available!
