English pre-1837 research
More English parish registers have come online with the indexing of about 200 north-eastern Kent parishes from the Canterbury Collection now available at FindMyPast.

The Diocese of London Consistory Court Wills index contains 31,000 entries of wills and letters of administration compiled from the London Diocesan Court registers with near complete coverage is provided for the years 1514-1858 (please note there are no registers for the years 1521-1539 and 1642-1670). In this period the Diocese of London included a wide geographical area including parts of the counties of Essex and Middlesex, and some parishes in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Accents & dialects
Have you ever wondered how your ancestor spoke in their British regional dialect? The British Library website Sounds covers all major regions of the UK and is worth a listen!

DNA
Regular readers know I am a sceptic about the value of DNA tests (see newsletters #29 & #76) and every time I reveal what I see as issues in the tests I attract some stick! It is pleasing to see some support for my stance in the series, Sense about Science. If you are contemplating taking these still quite expensive tests it may be appropriate to read the article.

Westminster Parish Registers
FindMyPast recently added 3 million baptisms, marriages and burials from 50 London churches to their website in early March. Members of SA Genealogy & Heraldry Society are reminded that FindMyPast can be accessed within the Society's library at no cost.

How to locate details for BDMs in SA
Newsletter #19 was all about how to locate a death record in South Australia and it is time to update the contents of that issue and reveal more avenues available to researchers.

It is also appropriate to expand the material to embrace births and marriages too.

Finding such records in SA (or anywhere else for that matter) is not as straightforward as it may seem! Firstly we have to contend with the human element—just because rules or laws are introduced it does not mean that everyone observed them. Secondly although we know that civil registration was introduced in South Australia in mid-1842 it certainly did not embrace the whole colony for a significant number of years.

The fact that some individuals did not report events to the authorities simply means that there will be no registration of the event. It does not mean that the event went unrecorded in other records as was outlined in Newsletter 80 in the article relating to unregistered deaths. As with such deaths, so it was with births and marriages, namely, the process of notifying the Principal Registrar in Adelaide meant that sometimes this did not eventuate. Therefore if a search of the published index fails, it is important to consult the District Registrar's records.

There are examples where the certificate can be found in District Records but does not appear in the state-wide index of the Principal Registrar. Some information did not even get to the District Registrar. When James Enright's wife, Mary, died at their Bugle Ranges home on 6 Sep 1856, James just buried her out the back! On this occasion the news reached the ears of the authorities and James was prosecuted. His defence was that he was ignorant of the need to report a death!

Adjacent: Register Newspaper 24 Oct 1856 p4a.

Similarly many parents failed to register the birth of a child, but certainly did not neglect the baptism! Likewise it is well documented that marriages can be found in church registers but no certified copy was ever forwarded to the authorities.
